ABOUT RITA
I live
in northern Maine near the Canadian
border, but have strong family ties down
in Massachusetts. My husband and I have
been married for what seems like forever
sometimes and have three great kids. One
girl, two boys, and a house full of
pets. When I’m not totally caught up in
getting my characters and scenes fleshed
out I can usually be found with my nose
stuck in a book, or snuggled up on the
couch with my hubby or one of the kids
watching a movie. I enjoy spending time
with my big noisy family and fishing
when I get the chance.
When it comes to writing I’ve always
made up stories to entertain my kids. As
they grew up I began writing romances to
entertain myself. I’ve been seriously
focusing on writing for the past three
and a half years. Luckily I have a
wonderful supportive family, and friends
that are willing to sit there and listen
to me ramble on about what my characters
have done, or are about to do. I am a
proud member of Romance Divas and enjoys
visiting the Romantic Times forum.
INTERVIEW
Q: What got you started in writing?
A: I’ve always been an avid reader, but
when my kids were younger I would make
up stories for them at nap time or too
keep them entertained in the car. As
they got older I started making up
stories to keep myself entertained.
After reading a book one night and
whining to my husband about how much I
hated the end, he said, "then write it
yourself." So I did. I haven't stopped
since.
Q: You come across as a very funny
and witty person. Is that something that
comes naturally during the writing
process, or is it something you go back
to add in later?
A: I think everyone needs a little humor
to go with the passion in their life,
but I don’t think you can force it. If
my readers get a giggle or two from one
of my stories that makes me feel great.
Q: Are any of your characters
based on real people?
A: Not completely, but I have thrown in
bits and pieces of people I know.
Q: Where do you get the
ideas/inspiration for your stories?
A: I’m not sure. Sometimes it can be
something someone says, or maybe
something I dream about.
Q: Why did you choose the romance
genre?
A: I like happy endings, laughter, and
the strong silent guy who sweeps a woman
off her feet. Where else can you find
all that in one book?
Q: Does your writing interfere
with your family life?
A: Not really. My family is very
supportive. If anything it interferes
with my getting enough sleep. I tend to
write best at night.
Q: How do you choose the titles
for your books?
A: I like them to give the readers a
hint about what the story’s about. So
far I haven’t been asked to change them.
Q: Do you create your characters
first and write a story around them? Or
do you come up with the story idea first
then create the characters?
A: It can happen either way. One of my
stories, A Damsel Without A Dress, I
came up with the title first, then I
worked on the idea and the characters.
Q: How do you pick the names for
your characters?
A: I think about their description and
attitude. Then if I still can’t come up
with one I look through a baby name book
until I find one that fits.
Q: Has your life changed since
you've been published?
A: No. Though my family is excited for
me, my nieces and nephew are the only
ones who are really wowed.
