INTERVIEW
Q: What's your typical writing day like?
A: Wake up, get the kids to school, work on the (at-home) day
job, squeeze in a few minutes of editing during breaks. Retrieve
kids from school, take kids to piano lessons, type on laptop in
the car while youngest watches a DVD. Sports practice/game,
dinner, bath, bedtime, work on writing/editing/promo/etc. until
the wee hours. Fall into bed, wake up the next day,
lather-rinse-repeat.
Q: How long have you been writing?
A: About as long as I've been able to hold a pencil! My mom
still has my first "published" work, an illustrated story titled
When Mommy is Cold, I Have to Wear a Sweater. I've always
written, from essays to stories to really maudlin poetry (the
high school years). I even won a college scholarship for a
quarter's tuition for a personal essay about a boy I had a crush
on during a Knowledge Bowl tournament. Hmm, maybe that should
have been my first clue I would end up writing romance!
Q: Okay then, why romance?
A: I came late to the romance genre, both as a reader and a
writer. My first published works were fantasy. It wasn't until
my second child was born that I started exploring romance as a
genre both to read and to write. In no time at all, I was
hooked—and I haven't stopped reading or writing romance since!
Q: What do you like to read?
A: Everything! I love most subgenres of romance: contemporary,
historical, suspense, paranormal, erotic, and "sweet," not to
mention sci-fi/fantasy, mystery, biographies, cereal boxes,
instruction manuals. You name it, I'll probably read it.
Q: What's the best writing advice you've ever received?
A: It's an acronym I try to keep in mind on a daily basis –
BICHOK. It stands for Butt In Chair, Hands On Keyboard. The only
way the writing will get done is to sit down and do it.
Q: What's your favorite thing about writing?
A: Can I say everything? No? Okay, I'll narrow it down. For me,
it's that moment when the characters do something completely
unexpected that changes the course of the book. That's when the
book and characters really come alive for me. |
