Interest in electronic books is rising,
and several local companies are in the
middle of what some view as a prologue
to what could grow into a major market.
After
years of incremental growth, consumer
adoption of so-called ebooks is
gathering speed because of the demand
for digital content combined with
improvements to reading devices. But
unlike newspapers and other providers of
digital content, ebooks remain a small
portion of the book publishing industry.
This
week, Austin-based
LibreDigital Inc. revealed that it
was selected by California-based Plastic
Logic to provide published content for a
reading device Plastic Logic is
scheduled to release next year. The
announcement came the same day that
bookselling giant
Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN)
unveiled the latest version of the
Kindle, the popular ebook reading device
that sold out last fall after television
talk show host Oprah Winfrey sang its
praises.
Last
week,
Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) said it
plans to make 1.5 million public domain
books accessible on mobile devices such
as the iPhone and its own T-Mobile G1.
In January, Austin-based Books On Board
released more than 30,000 ebook titles
for
Apple Inc.’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) hugely
popular iPhone.
Lexcycle Inc., which developed
software that enables iPhone users to
read books on the devices, is shifting
toward more pay-to-read books and
licensing an encryption tool from
Adobe Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: ADBE) to
do that.
Mainstream adoption of ebooks has been
anticipated for 10 years, but it finally
seems to be gaining traction, Lexcycle’s
Austin-based Chief Operating Officer
Neelan Choksi said.
“What
you’re seeing is multiple brands who are
marketing and talking about electronic
books,” he said. “I think the reality is
catching up with the hype.”
About
538,000 ebook readers were shipped last
year, generating $154 million in sales,
a 235 percent increase over 2007, the
Consumer Electronics Association
reported.
Lexcycle’s ebook reader application for
the iPhone, Stanza, has been downloaded
by 1.3 million users in seven months,
Choksi said.
Amazon’s latest version of the Kindle is
about the same size and price, $356, but
includes some sleeker features that make
it more user friendly, said Joshua
Tallent, founder of Austin-based eBook
Architects LLC.
More
standardized formats and wider adoption
of mobile devices with Internet
browsers, such as the iPhone, is fueling
the ebook activity, he said. The shift
is also providing an additional revenue
stream for producers of traditional
books as well.
“When
you get down to it, it’s good to get
into the ebook game for any publisher,”
Tallent said. “It’s the year of the
ebook, that’s for sure.”
LibreDigital, which launched in 1999 as
NewsStand Inc., proved that patience
pays. The company initially provided
electronic versions of newspapers and
expanded to ebooks last year.
CEO
Russ Reeder is projecting “exponential
growth” for the ebook market this year,
but said the industry needs millions
more books available combined with
better and less expensive devices.
Plastic
Logic’s ebook device is reportedly 8.5
inches-by-11 inches — about the size of
a pad of paper — and based on research
from Cambridge University in England.
Romance
is the most popular category of ebooks,
and Austin-based publisher
Siren-Bookstrand Inc.
sells about 20,000 of them per month,
President David DeBalko said.
The
company, founded in 2006, specializes in
romance novels under its brand and
others, such as
Harlequin Enterprises Ltd.
The
novels, with titles such as “Action and
Satisfaction” and “Plantation of Lust,”
typically sell for about $3.50 to $6.50
each. But Siren-Bookstrand’s most
popular format is PDF, geared for
personal computers, not mobile devices.
Books
On Board, which was founded in 2005, has
an ebook catalog with nearly 300,000
titles. President Bob LiVolsi declined
to disclose the company’s revenue or
sales figures, but said Books On Board
is now a top-five U.S. seller of ebooks.
Despite
all the activity, ebook sales account
for just $50 million of the $28 billion
in revenue generated by U.S. book
publishers, a fraction of the overall
industry.
Several
factors are contributing to the slow
adoption, including the different
formats and clunky reading devices that
are not negligible investments. Even
greater are the papercentric reading
habits that have been ingrained during
centuries of bookish behavior, LiVolsi
said.
